A Japanese "kawaii metal" band called Neon Oni built an audience of tens of thousands of monthly streaming listeners before fans uncovered that the group — its members, images and music — was generated by one person using AI tools. After being exposed, the creator recruited seven real musicians in Tokyo to perform the songs live, arguing the project ended up creating jobs rather than taking them.
